CNA Financial Q3 2026 Profit Falls on Catastrophe Losses
CNA Financial posted net income of $196M in Q3 2026, down sharply from $403M a year earlier, as catastrophe losses and weaker underwriting weighed on results.
CNA Financial reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $196 million, or $0.72 per share, a steep decline from $403 million recorded in the same period a year ago. Core income, the company's preferred performance measure, came in at $203 million, or $0.75 per share, compared with $409 million in the prior-year quarter.
The property and casualty segment bore the brunt of the deterioration, with P&C core income falling to $397 million from $456 million. The insurer attributed the drop to weaker underlying underwriting performance combined with elevated catastrophe losses during the quarter, reflecting an industry-wide trend of mounting weather-related claims.

The Life & Group segment also contributed to the year-over-year earnings gap, rounding out a broadly softer quarterly performance across CNA's business lines. The magnitude of the decline — net income roughly halved compared with the prior-year period — signals the degree to which catastrophe exposure compressed margins.
Analysts tracking the commercial insurance sector have noted that carriers with significant property exposure have faced persistent earnings pressure as severe weather events grow more frequent and costly. CNA's results underscore the challenge insurers face in pricing risk adequately while remaining competitive in commercial lines markets.
